The Latin America Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity Conference was held from Tuesday, May 13 to Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the JW Marriott in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This conference focused on laboratory biosafety and biosecurity issues relevant to Latin American scientists who work with infectious pathogens.  Laboratory researchers, administrators, policy makers, and others working with dangerous biological agents benefited from the conference by discussing both the risks of working with these pathogens and toxins, and methods for reducing these risks.

Scientists focusing on both human and animal diseases, in both clinical and research settings, were brought together to discuss the risks associated with modern bioscience research and diagnostics and methods for mitigating those risks without compromising the advance of life-saving bioscience.

The scientific program included keynote presentations by regional and international experts as well as presentations by members of the Latin American scientific community.

(The official languages of the conference are Spanish and English. Simultaneous translation will be provided.)

Topics that were covered include, but were not limited to:
• Policies/legislation
• Biosafety/Biosecurity implementation
• Biosafety/Biosecurity laboratory design considerations
• Biosafety/biosecurity in Animal laboratories or facilities
• Risk Assessment
• Program Management
• Laboratory risks: Laboratory acquired infections, Bioterrorism
